Coaching
and Music
Have you ever found yourself making resolutions, new comittments
or setting goals for yourself at work or home but haven't followed
through? You had great intentions but find yourself the next
year doing and saying the same thing. Very
little seems to get done. This may happen year after
year which defines the word insanity; "doing the same
thing over and over expecting a different result". Coaching is the
process where someone comes along side of you to help you stay the
course, make the plan and accomplish more than you had ever thought
you could and ...just may ...keep you from going insane!
This is where I found myself a few years ago. I had great
intentions but not much follow through. Ideas would come but
rarely acted on because I had no long range plan or goals.
Toward the end I had lost my passion for what I once loved. I
was drifting and didn't know it. Then, seemingly by
accident, I met a coach. Not just any coach but a man
who was full of dreams and plans for the largest coaching company
in America. It was his obvious passion.
After lunch together the second time he pointed out that I may
have lost my passion for music and would I consider learning to be
a coach at his company. I thought he was "nuts" and I
politely turned him down. The next few months it became clear
to me that maybe God brought him along to me because I needed much
more that a consistant paycheck, I needed to grow personally.
After my employment interview I again thought I had taken leave of
my mind. What am I doing? I haven't had a real job in
many years! But somehow I was hired and began the coach's
training. It was exhausting but yet I thought, how bad could
this be, I'm not going to be here long, I'll learn what I need and
move on. That was 5 years ago! In the meantime I have
regained my passion for music and enjoyed a new passion, coaching
others. Today I am part-time coaching and the Director of
Presentations for the now largest coaching company in
America. I have once again found joy in my journey.
The following is a brief synopsis of a small part of the system
I coach.
It is commonly believed that there are FIVE SPHERES OF
LIFE: Spiritual, Family, Personal, Financial and
Business. If one of these areas is out of balance it
effects all of the others in one way or another. For
example: if your job or business is not generating enough
income it will certainly effect, negativly, your financial
life, likely your personal life and for sure your family
life. If personally you are getting in better shape, reading
good books and eating properly, this will effect positivly
all the other spheres. It's very easy to "drift" in any area
and not know it until it begins to effect other areas. A
coach is trained to keep you focused on your
objectives, assist you in putting together a working
plan and help you to keep your eye on the ball even though "life"
may happen along the way.
Along with the FIVE SPHERES there is also the FOUR
STAGES OF GROWTH for each sphere: Survival,
Stability, Success and Significance. For example: in
the Financial area, if you are unable to pay all your bills each
month you are in Survival. If you are paying
all your bills on time and beginning to save a little money
monthly, you are in Stability. If all bills
are paid and you are putting away large amounts of money, investing
and making your money multiply for you, then you are in
Success. When you have all the money and
investments you will need for life and are giving away large
amounts of money, you then have arrived at
Significance. In order to move from each
stage of growth there needs to be a plan that changes your
priorities, thinking and objectives.
This is where coaching comes in. The coach has the
ability to give you perspective. I've often
said to my clients: "it's like someone in a hot air balloon over
you", not telling you where to go or what to do but merely alerting
you to the possibility you are taking a departure from your written
goals or helping point out measured growth for celebration.
It's a tremendous thing to consistantly set and achieve
goals. Successful people do it everyday. Most of whom
are coached! For me, it is very gratifying to help
others move forward in their life pursuits.
Along with writing new musicals (I have 2 more written and
coming soon!) I spend a great deal of my time coaching and getting
Rodger Strader Music to a place where it serves the musical needs
of church choirs. My wife, Kim, 3 horses and 2 dogs keep me
centered on my tiny ranch in the foothills of the San Jacinto
mountains in California.
